#167 Salomon "Sam" Schroeder ( Aaron Schroeder )

Other names for Sam: Samuel Schroeder.

Sam was born 4 Aug 1889 in Sassmacken, Russia. He died 26 Apr 1970 in W. Hartford, Hartford Co., Connecticut. He was buried in Hartford Free Burial Association, Hartford, Connecticut.

Sam immigrated on 3 Aug 1906, sailing from Hamburg, Germany and arriving in New York aboard the S.S. Graf Waldersee. We find his name on the passenger lists leaving Germany on 21 Jul 1906.

He appears again on the Manifest of Alien Passengers for New York. This indicates that his immediate destination is Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

On the 1910 Federal Census we find him in Milwaukee, Wisconsin working as a heel setter in a shoe factory. He is living with his cousin, Max Brazy. According to this census, he immigrated in 1907 and was still an alien. Max is a butcher who, according to later censuses, eventually sets up in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin. He is from Latvia and his family speaks Latvian at home instead of the German that the Schroeders report. The exact relationship of Sam to the Brazy family is uncertain. Same's son, Marvin, recalls being told about a relation, Gordon Gottlieb, who was a radio and television newscaster in Milwaulkee. Max Brazy was married to Bessie Gottlieb.

He lived in Clintonville, Waupaca Co., Wisconsin in 1917.

According to his World War I draft registration card, he was "short, stout with brown eyes and black hair." His naturalization petition amplifies that he was 5'4" tall and weighed 143 pounds. He was working for his brother, Herman, at the time. The text is hard to read, but it appears he was a shoemaker, which is consistent with his earlier census entry.

We find various Samuel Schroeders in the Milwaukee directories. The earliest where we can positively identify ours either by spouse's name or tracking addresses is the directory of 1924 and the latest is 1932.

There is no firm evidence of him so far on the 1920 Census. There is two Samuel Schroeders in Milwaukee, but they are born in Wisconsin and Romania, not Latvia/Russia. Also, both are married and the second has several children at this point. Sam's son says that Sam was living with his brother, Herman, somewhat illegally behind a store at this point and may have missed the census taker's notice. Another possibility is that there is an entry for a lodger in Ward 5 with the last name Schroder. The census taker's notes seem to imply that this person was not present, presumably the landlord was reporting, and no information is available beyond that the person is a single male. However, this would contradict the family story that he was living with his brother.

In 1926 he is in Milwaukee for the birth of his son, Aaron.

There is also no evidence of him so far on the 1930 Census even though his brother, Herman, reappears. His wife, Lillian, and son, Aaron, are also not found at this point. Perhaps they are still living behind the store while Herman and his family have moved. There are three Samuel Schroeders in the area, two in Milwaukee and one in Sheboygan. One is the Wisconsin-born from 1920, one was born in Canada. The third, from Sheboygan, was born in Russia, but is married to Charlot and has a daughter, Vivian, and is about 18 years too young.

In 1932 he is in Milwaukee for the birth of his son, Marvin.

He had a women's clothing store in Wisconsin. During the Depression, the store went under and he moved to Hartfort where his wife's family set him up in the gaming business. According to the 1942 city directory, this was called the General Amusement Game Co. A Samuel Schroeder appears on city directories from 1942 to 1970, although the only two we can match for certain are 1942 nd 1962.

On the 1940 Federal Census he is in Hartford, Connecticut with the two boys. They are lodgers in the house of Hyman Wein. He lists his occupation as a manager in a pinball business. This would have been the business owned by Abe Fish, Lillian's nephew.

He took the Oath of Allegiance on 19 Oct 1945 in Hartford, Connecticut.

After his brother, Herman, passed away, Sam married Frieda. They appear together on the 1962 directory for Hartford, Connecticut.

Sam married first #166 Liba "Lillian" Riesnik. She is the daughter of Lohie Resnick. She is an ancestor in the Resnick Line.

Marriage notes

They married 25 Dec 1924 in Milwaukee, Milwaukee Co., Wisconsin.

Other names for Lillian: Libby Resnick, Lillian Resnick, Lillie Resnick, Lillian Schroeder.

Lillian was born 14 May 1898 in Hancewicz, Russia. She died 28 Aug 1934 in Hartford, Connecticut from cancer. She was buried in Hartford Free Burial Association, Hartford, Connecticut.

Some family stories place her birth in Minsk, Russia. However, her niece, Rita Stein, wrote an autobiography that places the family in Hancewicz (now Hancavičy), a small town southwest of Minsk. The passenger lists that show her sister record a last address that phonetically sounds similar to this town. Finally, Samuel's petition for naturalization identifies this as her home town.

She appears on the 1920 Census of Buffalo, New York as Lillie Reznick, living with her sister, Mary Fisch. It shows that she immigrated in 1914 and is still an alien. She works as a machine operator in a factory. She is from Russia, as are her parents.

We don't see a Lillian Resnick, or close variation thereof, on the passenger lists. However, Rita calls Lillian "Aunt Libby" several times. Looking for a variation on that name, we find Liba Riesnik immigrating in 1914, which I believe to be a match. She arrived in New York City on 20 Jul 1914 aboard the ship Kursk. The year is a bit earlier than expected from Samuel's statement on his petition for naturalization that she entered for permanent residence in 1916. Perhaps he misremembered (the petition was in 1945) or perhaps she took an earlier trip over before settling permanently.

Liba left from the same port — Libau, Latvia — as Lillian's sister did when she emigrated. The birth date is slightly off, putting Liba as 18 years old instead of 16. At first, the point of origin seems disappointing. It is indexed by Ancestry.com as "Gonzowcz" but, looking at the original, we find that the actual name is "Ganzwiez". Searching for variations on that name, we find few hits but notably: Ganczevichi is a part of Hancavičy, Belarus. Liba is listed as a tailoress. Her father is listed a O. Riesnik; how that squares with Lohie (as listed by Mirel) is uncertain unless we assume that one entry clerk or the other misheard.

Lillian was not a naturalized citizen.

They divorced Abt 1958.

His daughter-in-law, Eileen, arranged for Sam to marry Herman's widow.

Other names for Frieda: Freda Schroeder.

Frieda was born 17 Nov 1893 in Russia. She died 2 Jul 1985 in Chicago, Illinois (probably).

She is the daughter of Michael Bloch.

She immigrated in 1905 according to the 1910 Census, in 1896 according to the 1930 Census. She lists her birthplace and that of her parents as Russia.
