#163 Herman I. Schroeder ( Aaron Schroeder )

Herman was born 16 Oct 1885 in Sassmacken, Russia. He died 8 Jul 1942 in Appleton, Outagamie Co., Wisconsin from cardiac insufficiency due to chronic heart disease. He was buried 9 Jul 1942 in Moses Montefiore Cemetery, Appleton, Outagamie Co., Wisconsin.

His middle initial is sometimes given as J. His birth date varies by a couple of days, depending upon the source consulted, from 16 Oct to 18 Oct.

He appears on the 1910 Census of Clintonville, Waupaca Co., Wisconsin. It shows he immigrated in 1908 but was not yet naturalized. His occupation was junk dealer. His parents are listed as German, as is his birth location. The indication of Germany is uncertain as all later censuses and documents put his birth in Russia and his younger brother, Samuel, was born in Sassmacken, Russia, which is now part of Latvia. However, his family is listed as speaking German rather that Yiddish. Note that his obituary gives his year of immigration as 1902.

His World War I Draft Registration card (he is listed as Herman J. Schroeder) gives his birth date as 17 Oct 1885. His World War II Draft Registration Card gives it as 17 Sep 1885. The World War I papers says he was of medium height, stout, with brown eyes and black hair. It also indicates that his first naturalization papers were filed by 12 Sep 1918.

There is no evidence of him so far on the 1920 Census of Clintonville, despite the fact that he is there in 1910 and 1920. His grand-nephew says that Herman and family were living somewhat illegally behind a store at this point and may have missed the census taker's notice. There is an abortive entry on the 1920 Census of Freedom, Ouagamie Co., Wisconsin where the census taker wrote in the name Herman Schroeder with no other information and then crossed the line off.

He was naturalized on 7 Jun 1920 in Waupaca Co., Wisconsin according to the naturalization index but I haven't found the actual documents.

According to the 1930 Census, he was born in Russia and immigrated in 1898. He is a dry goods merchant. Note that there is a Herman W. Schroeder of German extraction living in Clintonville but he is listed as born in that state.

He operated the Schroeder Dry Goods Store, which he purchased in 1910 from Siskin & Co. It was located in the Charles Bohn Building on Main St. in Clintonville. On the 1940 Census he is shown as the manager of the store and Freda is a clerk. Her father, Michael Bloch, is living with them.

Herman married #162 Frieda Bloch.

Marriage notes

They married Abt 1909.

Other names for Frieda: Freda Schroeder.

Frieda was born 17 Nov 1893 in Russia. She died 2 Jul 1985 in Chicago, Illinois (probably).

She is the daughter of Michael Bloch.

She immigrated in 1905 according to the 1910 Census, in 1896 according to the 1930 Census. She lists her birthplace and that of her parents as Russia.
