304. Anthony Oberly MECHLING (John Jarret , Thomas , Theobald) was born on 1 May 1818 in Lehigh Co., Pennsylvania. In 1844, Anthony, along with other trustees of the school, which had been the former Lutheran Church near their home, agreed to rent the school to the public school system and to keep it in good repair. Some 20 years later, Anthony voted with other local citizens to incorporate the school, which by that time had been removed from the public school system, as the "Union School and Church Association," which still exists today.
On 6 Jan 1857, he was awarded the Mechling homestead and property. On 15 Jun 1868, he sold 14 acres of the land to Samuel Stauffer. That same year he retired and built another house in Zionsville. Two years later, an extremely rich vein of magnetic iron ore was found on his property. In 1875, he deeded part of his property to sons, Benjamin F. and Anthony Wayne Mechling.
