16. Joseph MECHLING (Jacob , Jacob ) was born in Berks Co., PA (probably). He died on 25 Feb 1839. He was buried in Range I.W. #110, Congressional Cemetery.
Joseph was in the first graduating class from West Point. In 1800, they moved to Washington, DC. He was the engineer that built Ft. Washington. He was the first auditor for the Treasury Department, and was also the first Governor General of Liberia. His home, which he built on I St. in Washington was known as Spider Hall.
He was originally buried in a Public Vault in the Congressional Cemetery. On 27 May 1840, he body was moved to the current location.
Joseph married Margaret WHITE on 31 Oct 1795. Margaret died on 10 May 1860.
She was previously married to a Mr. Wright.
Family story has it that she was found in an opoen boat on the Atlantic Ocean and adopted by the Whites.
[Mercy IV-96] lists her death date as 10 May 1960. Since this would have made her almost two hundred years old, I've changed the year to 1860.

When he was 30 years old, he became a private in the 4th Company, 7th Battalion, Philadelphia Co. Militia. He served in the Revolutionary War.
Samuel married Maria Magdalena BOCKIUS on 5 Sep 1782. Maria was born on 18 Jun 1959. She was buried in Lower Burial Ground, Germantown, Pennsylvania.
[Mercy IV-96] notes she probably was the daughter of Johann Godfried & Philippena Catharine Bockius, a prominent Philadelphia family.
There also is a note that her headstone gives her date of death as 18 Jun 1759 at the age of 61. Since this is somewhat unlikely, [Mercy IV-96] assumes it is her birth date.
