Adam was born 7 Feb 1859.

He never married. He was lost for 14 days in a severed snowstorm, without food or shelter, in the then Territory of Washington. He and his brother, Orange, were securing homestead rights to a tract of timber. His feet were so badly frozen that they had to be amputated. The timber land was later razed by fire.

From the New York Times of 21 Apr 1885:

A TRUSTED EMPLOYE[sic] ARRESTED

Pittsburgh, April 20 - A. Q. Mechling, a trusted clerk of D. & F. S. Welty, wholesale dealers in carpets, has been arrested, charged with embezzlement. It is alleged that he has stolen $5,000 through systematic peculation, which has been carried on for several years. Mechling had been in the employ of the firm for so long that suspicion did not at first fall upon him. A plan was set to single out the guilty man, and all were astounded when it was discovered almost beyond a doubt that he was the man. Nothing was said to any one about what had been discovered, but a charge of embezzlement was preferred against Mechling before Alderman Burk, of this city. This step was taken to keep the affair quiet, as it was not desired that it should become publicly known. Mechling was arrested and furnished bail in the sum of $8,000, his father becoming his security. Two charges were preferred—one for embezzlement and the other for stealing from an employer. The accused clerk is about 24 years old and belongs to one of the best and most highly respected families of Greensburg.
