Gary was born 1 Jan 1943 in Kittanning, Armstrong Co., Pennsylvania. He died 25 Jan 1966 in Deo Mang Pass, Binh Dinh Province, Vietnam from a C-123 crash. He was buried in Kittanning Cemetery, Kittanning, Armstrong Co., Pennsylvania.

He was a Specialist 4 with the U.S. Army in the Vietnam War, serving with Company A, 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division. His tour started on 16 Aug 1965.

On 25 Jan 1966 elements of the 1st Cavalry Division were redeploying in preparation for Operation Masher, a division-size sweep mission. A C-123B Provider (tail number 54-0702) transporting troops from An Khe to Bong Sen went down in Binh Dinh Province. Four aircrew and 42 troopers from 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry, were killed in the accident.
