Alexander was born Abt 1805 in Washington, District Of Columbia.
In 1860, he was a Claim Agent. In 1861, he was the 4th Auditor. They lived in Georgetown. He witnessed the burning of Washington, DC by the British during the War of 1812 when he was a small child.
[Mercy IV-96] variously gives his last name as "Mechling" and "Mechlin," but lists his children as the latter.
