Josephine was born 18 May 1862 in Lexington, Fayette Co., Kentucky. She died 14 Sep 1922 in Washington, District Of Columbia. She was buried 19 Sep 1922 in Oak Hill Cemetery, Lawrence, Douglas Co., Kansas.

Her obituary reads: "Entered into life eternal, on the evening of September fourteenth, Josephine Browne Sanford, of Washington, D.C. Her reamins were brought to Lawerence, and the burial services were held in Trinity Church on the morning of September nineteenth. She was laid to rest beside her mother in Oak Hill Cemetery. Mrs. Sanford, affectionately known in her girlhood as Joe Browne, was born near Lexington, Ky. coming to Lawrence with her mother in the early seventies. Her education began, as did that of so many of the children of the church in those early days in the schoolroom of the Little Chapel of Trinity Church. Passing from there, through the various grades of the public schools, she entered the University. It was largely through her efforts in petitioning for a chapter of Kappa Alpha Theta that the Kappa chapter of Kansas University was installed. She was one of the 13 charter members. After her marriage, Josephine and her husband left immediately for their future home in Pontiac, Mich. She helped to organize a chapter of the DAR in Pontiac and was an active member of All Saints Church. In 1907, they moved to Washington, D.C. where William was connected with the Interstate Commerce Commission. Shortly before her death, she was elected Regent of Constitution Chapter of the DAR, the largest chapter in Washington, D.C."
