James was born Apr 1847 in Piqua, Ohio.
In 1875, he went to Yazoo City, Mississippi and became a deputy assessor. In 1876, he moved to Marshalltown, Iowa, then later to northwestern Kansas, then on to Emporia, Kansas and finally to Cedar Point, Kansas.
After marriage, they homesteaded at Golden, Kansas. Then, in 1892, they moved to Rumsey, California where he built a store and was postmaster.
James married #25466 Essie C. Chittendem.
