Henry was born 5 Apr 1843 in Fairfield Co., Ohio. He died 27 Aug 1917 in Madison Co., Ohio. He was buried in Pleasant Cemetery, Mt. Sterling, Madison Co., Ohio.

He enlisted 1 Aug 1862 in the Ohio Volunteers. He served in the Battle of Richmond in 1862; the Battle of Jackson, Mississippi in 1863; the Batle of Guntown, Mississippi in 1864. He was wounded at Vicksburg and discharged on 14 Aug 1865.

His wound at Vicksburg was a shot in the mouth between his chin and lower teeth, pushing back his teeth so the roots were exposed. The force of the shot knocked him to his knees, but he rose immediately, according to a witness, who testified that Henry, upon rising, said "confound the ball." He was treated and returned to duty. The wound left no scar.

Some genealogies list a Charles Gilliland Bower as a child.

Henry married #24900 Letha Robison.

Letha was born 24 Dec 1843 in Ohio. She died 10 Nov 1914 in Madison Co., Ohio.

She is the daughter of John Scott & Maria/Mariah (Riddle) Robison. She was the widow of Marion Gilliland, by whom she had a child, Charles.

It is possible that Henry adopted Charles, as he is called Charles Bower on the 1880 Census.

Her name is variously spelled Letha and Leithy.
