Most records after baptism list him as Barnet, although he is sometimes referred to as Barnard Thomas.
[Mercy I-98] gives his birth as 22 Oct 1769 in Hempfield Twp., Pennsylvania. There's no source listed, but it may have been [Gresham] as the latter has similar information. However, I haven't found [Gresham] reliable and the information is contradicted by [Humphrey], which gives the date and place listed here based upon church records from Zion Reformed Church in Elizabeth Twp. FindAGrave gives the birth year as 1766 and the death as 15 Jun 1851 without listing a source.
I have not found Barnet on a census prior to 1800. Presumably, he is one of the males in his father's household.
From 1800 onward, we find him in Hempfield Twp., Pennsylvania as a farmer. In the 1800 Federal Census he is Barny Thomas.
On the 1810 Federal Census and the 1820 Federal Census he is listed as Barnet Thomas.
On the 1830 Federal Census his name is given as Barnabus Thomas.
It reverts to Barnet on the 1840 Federal Census.
On the 1840 Federal Census, we find him listed as Barny Thomas. Living with him is his grandaughter, Elizabeth (#22621, Barnett Jr.'s child). Also living there are David & Susan Kuhns and Lavina Reams. Barnet is rather well-to-do; his farm is listed as worth $42,300, which would be about $1.25 million today.
