#1844 Casper Bernhardt

Casper was born 1719 in Germany. He died 1791 in Limerick Twp, Montgomery Co., Pennsylvania.

Casper arrived in Philadelphia on 10 Nov 1764 aboard the ship Boston, Mathew Carr, Master. With him were his wife and four children: Johann Wilhelm, Jacob, Marilis and Anna Maria. The ship sailed from Rotterdam, Netherlands, stopped at Cowes, England and then proceeded to Philadelphia. The passenger list states that there were 203 people aboard of which 69 were males over the age of 16. Only the latter are listed by name, including Casper Bernhard and Wilhelm Bernhardt.

Family story has some evidence of a third son. When William left home, it was said he had one brother who "stayed east" and another who "went west with him." Jacob went west with William.

Casper's grave has not been found but is believed to be in the old St. John's Reformed Church Cemetery near Limerick Village. A transcription of his will follows:

In the name of God, Amen. I, Casper Bernhard of Limerick Township in the County of Montgomery and State of Pennsylvania Yeoman beeing weak and Sickly in in Body bud of Perfect Mind and Memory thanks be given unto God Calling unto mind the Mortality of My Body Do make and ordain this my Last Will and Testament in Maner folowing I do Recoment my Soul into the hand of almighty God that gave it and my Body I recoment To the Earth To be Buried in a Decend Christion Buriel at the Decretion of My Executors and Such worldly Estate where the allmighty has Blessed Me with I make over in Manner following Idem My will is that all and Singular My just Depts Funeral and other Exspences Concerning me and my Estat be well and truly paid by Executors Idem My will is that my First born son William Barnhard Shall have them Six pounds which he has allready Received from me which he Shall have first and for most More than any of My other Children the Resetute of all My Small Estate I Leve in the hands of My Dear wife - Mary Barnhard During her Natural Live and after her Diseace My will is that My youngest Daughter Mary Bernhart Small have the house where I Now Lives Situadet in Limerick Township and also My part of the Stabls and the ground where the Buildings are Erected on and also my gardain Spot and grass Spot adjoining Together which She Shall have to her seilf and to her heirs and assigns for Ever and the Resitute of My Estate my will is that my Daughter Marilis Kretz Shall have the spot of ground where he has Erected his house and Buildings on To her and her heirs and assigns for Ever and the Remainder of My Estate To be Equaly Devidet amongst My four Children Namly William and Jacob Barnhard and Marilis Kretz and Maria Barnhard and I do here Nominate Constitute and appoint My Dear and Loveing wife Anna Maria Barnhart and My Trusty Son-in-law Henry Kretz My Sole executors of this my last will and Testament in witness thereof I have set my hand and Seal the Night Day of August in the year of our Lord one thousand Seven hundred and Ninty.
